Our Great Commission - will we choose to accept it?
Twenty first century Australian Christians can be a little caught up in the froth and bubble and silliness of our world. Some of it is fun, some harmless, some not so much.
Our danger is allowing the illusions, the Kardashians, the royal weddings, sport, existential political and military dangers and threats and even good works and causes to become our reality. We have a greater reality, our mission, our calling by God.
What are we called to do? “The Great Commission” in Matthew’s gospel (Mt 28:16-20) is directed personally at each follower of Christ. Rightly, we live in the world, amidst and immersed in demands, needs, attractions and distractions. But we don’t live in a directionless vacuum. We know our calling! We are to make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Trinity. God wants us to live life to the full, joyously, and exultant and always conscious of this call.
The “Great Commission”, the Trinity Sunday gospel from Matthew today, is closely coupled with Pentecost which we celebrated last week. Our call is to make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Trinity. But how to do this? Those disciples, men and women, gathered in hope and confusion pre-Pentecost receive tongues of fire with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Now they know how to undertake the commission!
Pope Francis exhorts us that, “This is a powerful summons to all of us. You too need to see the entirety of your life as a mission. Try to do so by listening to God in prayer and recognising the signs that he gives you. Always ask the Spirit what Jesus expects from you at every moment of your life and in every decision, you must make, to discern its place in the mission you have received. Allow the Spirit to forge in you the personal mystery that can reflect Jesus Christ in today’s world.” (Pope Francis “Rejoice and Exult”, May 2018 [p19])
