Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers,
The frosty mornings are certainly upon us. I hope that you have some fine days over the school holidays so that you can make the most of being outdoors, even if it is a bit cool! The students have had a long busy term and will be looking forward to a break.
Sporting events, excursions, incursions, Grandparent’s day, Mother’s Day events and of course the disco have all been highlights. In addition to these, the students have been engaged daily in solid classroom learning experiences. Thanks to all staff and students for their hard work over the term.
Special thanks to the P and F for a busy term fundraising and for providing the extra fun for our students.
We will be having a formal Blessing and Opening of our last two building projects on Tuesday 23 July. Everyone in our St Joseph’s school community is invited. Please see the attached invitation.
We warmly welcomed Sally-Anne Saxton to our staff this week. Sally-Anne is our new Education Support Officer and will be with us for the rest of the year.
Student school reports will be available on PAM on Thursday afternoon.
Have a great break everyone!
Best wishes,
Ros Joyner
Principal

Sacrament News
Listed below are some dates for your diary regarding the Sacramental program for Confirmation and First Holy Communion in 2024.
Confirmation 2024
The Confirmation ceremony, celebrated by Bishop Greg Bennett, will be held on Friday, 26th July, 7pm at St Ita's Church, Drouin.
Just a few things regarding Confirmation:
Firstly, there has been a change in venue for the Confirmation Mass. We have decided to hold the Confirmation Mass at St. Ita's Church, Drouin. It is on the same date: Friday 26th July, at 7pm, but at St. Ita's Church in Drouin and NOT at Marist Sion, as previously advertised. This is in week 2 of Term 3.
I would like to finalise as many things as possible before the holidays.
If you still have paperwork that you need to hand in, it would be really appreciated if I could receive it before the holidays, that is, before this coming Friday, 29th June.
This paperwork is:
- the form with your child's sponsors name, and name they will take in Confirmation.
- a copy of your child's Baptism certificate
- the envelope for the contribution for sacrament resources
These things can be handed into the Parish Office, 19 Connor Street, Warragul, or emailed back to me on this email address. The contribution can be paid by direct debit into the parish account (the details are on the envelope). If neither of these options suit you, you could also hand your paperwork into the school office/catechist class, but please clearly mark it Confirmation: Attention Liz Schellekens.
Finally, I have listed the remaining events in this sacrament process:
COMBINED 2nd RITE of RECONCILIATION
Thursday 18th July, St Joseph’s Church, Warragul, 7pm
Retreat Day (for candidates)
Friday 19th July, 9.30—2.30 Marist Sion
Sacrament of Confirmation
Friday, 26th July, 7pm St. Ita's Church, Drouin.
Please contact me if you have any concerns or would like assistance in any way.

A message from Deacon Mark
What relief! - We are saved!
For all their amazing experiences with him, the fearful disciples (Mark 4:35-41) still wail that Jesus doesn’t care that they are about to drown. And after 2000 years of prayer and study, discussion and teaching, we modern Christians, often sound exactly the same.
Why did you let this happen, God? “Do something! Fix it. Make it better.
We don’t get that this gospel is more about faith than the miraculous stilling of the water. Of course he can do that; he is God!
God gives us free will to make decisions in our interaction with other people and with the natural world, but when things go badly, we are very quick to demand that God fixes it. We want it both ways - freedom of decision but protection from the consequences.
He is not a puppet master, but God alone knows how our actions and predicaments play out in this world and the next. Rightly, we ask for help, but we should end every prayer “your will be done on earth as in heaven.”
Jesus stills the wind but questions their faith. In our lives, faith doesn’t change our “storms”, but it changes us. Faith allows us to be still and peaceful, amid the storm, to keep all things in perspective. To be reassured as Julian of Norwich told us long ago, “all manner of things will be well.” Particularly when the world is going pear shaped for us, we need to recognise that we don’t know the variables that God knows, and we will never have all the answers.
There are really only two prayers, "Help" and "Thank You".
Deacon Mark Kelly

SCHOOL TV - Celebrating NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is celebrated by all Australians and is a great opportunity to recognise and learn more about the history and culture of indigenous communities.
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced back to the Aboriginal rights movement, when on Australia Day 1938, protestors marched through the streets of Sydney to highlight the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. Today, it is a week-long celebration held in July that consists of range of traditional and contemporary activities.
NAIDOC Week is an important event that helps build positive relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. It enables a deeper understanding of our differences and similarities. NAIDOC week is an opportunity for all Australians to eliminate bias and discrimination by reflecting and reconciling the wrongs of the past to facilitate hope and build a fairer future. Families are encouraged to join in and support young people in learning the significance of NAIDOC Week.
This Special Report offers suggestions on how families can celebrate NAIDOC Week together. We hope you take a moment to reflect on the information offered, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If this raises any concerns for you, a loved one or the wellbeing of your child, please seek medical or professional help.

2024
Term 2 Monday 15 April - Friday 28 June (2:20pm finish time)
Term 3 Monday 15 July - Friday 20 September (2:20pm finish time)
Term 4 Tuesday 8 October - Tuesday 17 December (3:20pm finish time)
Car Line
Our school is very blessed with a long carline with ample parking. However, we continue to experience some issues during the afternoon pickup. Burke Street is extremely busy from 3:00-3:30pm. If you arrive before school finishes, it is an expectation that you move all the way down the carline and fill all spaces. If the carline is full, take a parking spot opposite the carline and walk to the crossing for student collection. Alternatively, leaving home 5-10 minutes later may be a better option to avoid being stuck in the congestion. Children are supervised in the carline area until 3:35pm, at which time, our carline and Burke Street are clear.
School Crossing
Please remember that the carline is private property and all people using our carline must follow the instructions of the staff managing the area - this is non-negotiable and aggressive or abusive behaviour will not be tolerated. Entering the carline via the exit is dangerous and illegal.
When waiting along Burke Street to enter the school grounds, please do not stop your vehicle on the school crossing. For safety reasons, the school crossing supervisor is not authorised to allow children to cross the school crossing if a vehicle has stopped over the school crossing.
Medical Profiles and Emergency Contact Details
At the beginning of each school year, we remind parents and carers that it is time to review your child/ren's medical profile on PAM. Any changes in medical needs should be communicated to the school to ensure that we provide the most up-to-date care for our students. If emergency contact details have changed or emails, phone numbers need updating, please contact the office to provide the updates necessary. The most efficient way to provide these details to the office would be to email - info@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au
If your child is affected by Anaphylaxis or has any allergies and requires an ASCIA Allergy Plan developed by your child's doctor, please provide information and a copy to the office. In addition, Asthma plans may need updating, please ensure that these are also current. If your child has medication stored at our school, please check with the office that the medication is still in date and there is ample supply.

School Uniform
During Term 2 and Term 3, all students are required to wear their full winter uniform, including correct socks and shoes. Wearing the school uniform correctly demonstrates school pride and identity. Please ensure your child has the correct uniform on the correct days.
We appreciate your support.
Lost Property
Please note that if your child tests positive to Covid-19, it is strongly recommended that students:
- Who test positive to COVID-19 should stay home and isolate for five (5) days;
- Should not attend school after five (5) days if still symptomatic;
- Who are symptomatic but have not tested positive should not attend school until their symptoms resolve;
- Parents, guardians or carers advise the school of the COVID-19 positive test result.
To assist with limiting the spread of COVID-19 and other illnesses, parents, guardians and carers should be strongly encouraged to ensure that their child(ren) remain at home if they are unwell, including if they have tested positive to COVID-19.
Absences & Holidays
In Victoria, it is compulsory for children and young people aged 6–17 years to attend school.
Parents are legally required to ensure their child attends school every day and to provide an explanation for their child's absence from school unless an exemption from attendance has been granted or an exception to their attendance applies.
Absences
If your child is away sick or away due to a planned absence or appointment, please ensure you advise the school office. Student absence text messages are sent out if your child is marked as absent without a reason. Emails or ClassDojo messages may be missed in some instances; if the classroom teacher is teaching or the classroom teacher may be away. It is imperative that you notify the office through one of the following methods:
1. Log into PAM (Parent Access Module) and register your child's absence;
2. Email absence@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au or info@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au
3. Phone the office on (03) 5623 2943
When sending an email, you may wish to "cc" your child's classroom teacher so they are aware of the absence too.
Holidays
If you are planning an extended holiday (a week or more) during the school term, please email info@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au or principal@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au addressing your intentions to our Principal, Mrs Roslyn Joyner.
If you have any questions or need any clarification, please feel free to contact Shirley or Kitty in the office on (03) 5623 2943.

Thanks to all our families who were able to support the Glow Disco last Friday night.

We wanted to express our thanks to our wonderful parent helpers (all 36 of them) across the day/night, we could not have done it without you and you all did an awesome job!
Also, a massive shout out to the 12 staff who gave up their evening after a long day to support the children and get their groove on- the children loved having you there.
